History

The Browns were founded in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference and named after their first head coach, Paul Brown, whose innovations — including the modern playbook and full-time coaching staff — shaped how the sport is run. Cleveland joined the NFL in 1950 and won multiple championships in the pre-Super Bowl era of the 1950s and '60s, built around fullback Jim Brown, still regarded as one of the greatest players in league history. The Browns have never reached a Super Bowl. The original franchise relocated to Baltimore in 1996 to become the Ravens, but by league agreement Cleveland kept the Browns' name and history, and a reactivated team returned to the field in 1999.

Records & quirks

  • Jim Brown's 12,312 career rushing yards stood as the NFL record for over two decades.
  • His 1,863 rushing yards in 1963 is still the franchise record and the NFL's oldest rushing mark.
  • Brown led the league in rushing a record eight times in his nine pro seasons.
  • Cleveland's longest streak of consecutive road wins is seven games, reached three separate times.
