History

New Orleans was awarded an NFL franchise on All Saints' Day, 1 November 1966, inspiring both the name and its connection to the city's jazz standard 'When the Saints Go Marching In.' The Saints endured four decades of mostly losing football before quarterback Drew Brees arrived in 2006, the same year the team returned to a rebuilt Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, and led New Orleans to its only Super Bowl win after the 2009 season. That victory, coming so soon after the storm, became a symbol of the city's recovery. The Superdome's downtown setting and the Saints' deep connection to New Orleans's culture and rebuilding remain central to the franchise's identity.
