About 2027 NHL Winter Classic
On New Year's Eve 2026, the Utah Mammoth play their first outdoor game in franchise history when they host the Colorado Avalanche in the Discover NHL Winter Classic at Rice-Eccles Stadium, on the University of Utah campus above Salt Lake City. It's a landmark occasion for hockey's newest market — every other NHL franchise had already played outdoors at least once — and it arrives at a fitting stage: Rice-Eccles hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics, when Salt Lake City itself became a global hockey venue for a fortnight. The game is scheduled for late afternoon on 31 December, with the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop and Utah's new franchise finally getting its turn in the NHL's marquee regular-season event. The campus sits a short TRAX light-rail ride from downtown Salt Lake City. Stay downtown for the city's restaurants and nightlife over the holiday week, with an easy ride up to the stadium for kick-off — and build in time either side for Utah's ski resorts, a world-class detour barely half an hour from the city.
History
The Winter Classic began on 1 January 2008, when the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout, Sidney Crosby scoring the winner, in front of a then-NHL-record crowd of 71,217 at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium. Snow fell through much of the game — officials repeatedly stopped play to clear the ice — and the contest became known locally as the "Ice Bowl", cementing the idea that outdoor hockey, played in whatever weather turns up, was worth doing again. It was the first outdoor NHL regular-season game played in the United States, and its success turned what could have been a one-off novelty into an annual New Year's fixture, staged in college and NFL football stadiums across the continent ever since, each edition pairing two teams — often with a shared local rivalry or a franchise still chasing its first outdoor appearance — in front of a crowd many times larger than either side's home rink can normally hold.
