Trofaiach sits in the Erzberg iron-mining region of Styria, a small market town whose economy long ran on ore rather than tourism. It's not a destination people travel far for: the appeal is the surrounding Eisenerz Alps, hiking and cycling routes, and proximity to the Erzberg mine itself, one of Europe's largest iron-ore deposits and now a tourist attraction with its giant terraced pit and mining trucks.

The town centre has a modest Styrian charm, church, market square, older buildings, but little in the way of sights that would justify a multi-day stay on its own. Be honest: this is a base for outdoor activity or a stopover en route to Eisenerz or Leoben rather than a place with much nightlife or dining variety.
