Data sources
Much of what we show about places, maps and travel times comes from open data made by other people. We use it, we are grateful for it, and this page lists each source with its licence. Hotel prices and availability come from our booking suppliers, not from the sources below.
OpenStreetMap
© OpenStreetMap contributors
Licence: ODbL 1.0 · openstreetmap.org/copyright
We use it for
- Travel times on foot and by car (calculated with Valhalla from OpenStreetMap extracts)
- Walking times to stations and stops, and the lines that serve them
- Area names and town labels
- Geocoding, with Photon and Nominatim
- Map tiles on hotel and place maps
GeoNames
Licence: CC BY 4.0 · geonames.org/
We use it for
- Place names, populations and centre points for cities and towns
Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons
Licence: CC BY-SA 4.0 · commons.wikimedia.org/ · Wikimedia Terms of Use · en.wikipedia.org
We use it for
- Destination, event and landmark photographs
- Some landmark descriptions (being replaced)
Each photograph carries its own licence (mostly CC BY-SA or CC BY, some public domain) and is credited on the image where it is shown. Wikipedia text is available under CC BY-SA 4.0 (and the GFDL). We are replacing the landmark descriptions that started from Wikipedia text with our own wording based on Wikidata facts. Photograph licences are set out on each file page on Wikimedia Commons.
Wikidata
Licence: CC0 · wikidata.org/
We use it for
- The list of notable landmarks and their coordinates
NASA POWER
Licence: POWER referencing terms · power.larc.nasa.gov/
We use it for
- Long-term weather trends for a place
The data was obtained from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center's Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) project funded through the NASA Earth Science Division. NASA POWER states no licence, only this wording for anyone using its data.
European Central Bank, via Frankfurter
Licence: ECB copyright and reuse terms · frankfurter.dev/
We use it for
- Daily euro foreign exchange reference rates behind our currency conversions
Source: European Central Bank. The ECB allows free use of its published information if it is reproduced accurately, cited as the source, and any change is stated. We convert and calculate from the reference rates, so figures on our pages are converted, not the ECB's own. Most of our rates are ECB euro reference rates; AED and SAR are fixed central-bank pegs, which the ECB does not publish. Frankfurter passes the rates on and says each provider's own terms apply, so it adds none of its own.

OS Code-Point Open
Licence: Open Government Licence v3.0 · ordnancesurvey.co.uk/products/code-point-open
