Washington DC is laid out around the National Mall, and its greatest trick is that most of the big attractions cost nothing: the Smithsonian runs seventeen museums and the National Zoo with free admission, and the monuments and memorials from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol are all open to walk.

Georgetown brings cobblestones and Federal townhouses, U Street its nightlife and Ethiopian food, and in late March the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin pull huge crowds. It is a working government city, so be realistic: parts of downtown are formal and quiet after hours, security and queues are a fact of life, and summers are swampy and hot. Stay near Dupont Circle or Penn Quarter for Metro access, restaurants and a short walk to the Mall.
