History

The Ashes, played between England and Australia since 1882, takes its name from a mock obituary printed after Australia beat England at The Oval that year, joking that English cricket had died and its ashes would be taken south; the little urn is now kept at Lord's. The ground on the south coast at West End near Southampton opened in 2001 as the new home of Hampshire, replacing the county's old Northlands Road ground, and quickly grew into an international venue with its own on-site hotel and a bowl-shaped setting in the Hampshire countryside.
