History

The Belmont Stakes, first run in 1867, is the oldest of the three races that make up American thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, predating both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Nicknamed the Test of the Champion, it is run over a mile and a half — the longest of the Triple Crown legs — on the dirt at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, just beyond New York City.

A colt or filly arriving with the Derby and Preakness already won seeks to complete the sweep, and the Belmont has decided Triple Crowns since Sir Barton's first in 1919; Secretariat's 1973 victory by 31 lengths, in a track record that still stands, remains among the greatest performances the sport has seen.

Thirteen horses have completed the American Triple Crown, most recently Justify in 2018. After several runnings at Saratoga during a major redevelopment of the old track, the 2027 race returns to a rebuilt Belmont Park on Long Island.
