History

The Chevron Championship is one of the five majors in women's golf and the first of the season, the spring opener on the LPGA Tour. It began life in 1972 as the Colgate-Dinah Shore, named for the entertainer and keen golfer Dinah Shore, and was granted major status in 1983. For decades it was played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, where it gave the sport one of its most joyful traditions: the winner's leap into the lake beside the 18th green, known as Poppie's Pond.

In 2023 the tournament moved to the Greater Houston area under its Chevron title, carrying the champion's celebratory dive to Texas. Its list of winners reads as a history of the women's game, from Amy Alcott and Betsy King to Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa. Held in the spring, it sets the tone for the major season and draws the world's leading players to compete for one of the game's most coveted titles.
