Good to know: Premier League kick-off dates and times move for TV broadcast picks all season — often on a few weeks’ notice. If your stay is built around the match, choose a free-cancellation rate so your booking can move with it.

History

Aston Villa formed in 1874, when members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel cricket team in Handsworth decided they needed a winter sport to keep fit, and the club they founded became one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Football League itself in 1888. Villa have won the English title seven times and the FA Cup seven times, but the club's defining night came far from Birmingham: on 26 May 1982 in Rotterdam, Peter Withe's goal beat Bayern Munich 1-0 to bring the European Cup home, one of only six such wins by an English club. That achievement still anchors Villa Park's sense of itself as a genuine European heavyweight fallen quiet, rather than a provincial also-ran.

Records & quirks

  • Villa's record win at any level is 13-0 against Wednesbury Old Athletic in the FA Cup, October 1886.
  • In 1897 Villa became the only club to win the league title and the FA Cup on the same day, beating Everton 3-2 in the final.
  • Villa Park has hosted 57 FA Cup semi-finals, more than any other ground in the competition's history.
  • Villa's record Premier League win is 7-1 against Wimbledon, February 1995.
