Good to know: Premier League kick-off dates and times move for TV broadcast picks all season — often on a few weeks’ notice. If your stay is built around the match, choose a free-cancellation rate so your booking can move with it.

History

Brighton & Hove Albion were founded in 1901 and take their Seagulls nickname from a chant: away fans at a derby with Crystal Palace sang 'Eagles, Eagles', and Brighton's own supporters answered back with 'Seagulls, Seagulls', a name that stuck for good. The club's story since has been almost as much about where they played as how: the Goldstone Ground was home from 1902 until it was sold in 1997, leading to two years ground-sharing at Gillingham and over a decade at Withdean Stadium before the Amex finally opened at Falmer in 2011. That permanent, purpose-built home underpinned Brighton's rise from the lower leagues to a settled top-flight and European club.

Records & quirks

  • A depleted wartime Brighton side lost 0-18 to Norwich City on Christmas Day 1940 — still the club's heaviest defeat.
  • In December 1996 Brighton dropped to 92nd — bottom of the entire Football League — before survival on the final day of that season.
  • Brighton's record cup win is 10-1 against Wisbech Town at the Goldstone Ground, FA Cup first round, 1965.
  • Brighton's biggest Premier League away win is 5-0 at Sheffield United, February 2024.
