History

Everton were founded in 1878 as St Domingo's, a church side in the district of Everton, taking the area's name the following year as the club opened up beyond its original congregation. Nicknamed the Toffees after a local sweet shop, Everton are one of English football's most successful old clubs, with nine league titles, five FA Cups and a Cup Winners' Cup. For 133 years, from 1892, home was Goodison Park, a tightly-packed cathedral of a ground the club left with an emotional send-off in May 2025. Their new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock on the Mersey waterfront, opened for the 2025-26 season, with Everton beating Brighton 2-0 in the first competitive match played there.
