History

The Colts franchise began in Baltimore in 1953 and became a byword for football glamour through the 1950s and '60s behind quarterback Johnny Unitas, whose crew cut and high-top cleats defined the position's golden age. In one of sport's most infamous moves, owner Robert Irsay relocated the team to Indianapolis overnight on 28 March 1984, loading fifteen moving trucks in darkness to beat a threatened legal block on the franchise leaving the city. Baltimore won a championship in 1958 often called 'the greatest game ever played,' and Indianapolis added a Super Bowl after the 2006 season behind Peyton Manning, whose run of MVP-calibre seasons there is among the most decorated in league history.

Records & quirks

Unitas threw a touchdown pass in 47 straight games, an NFL record that stood for roughly half a century until Drew Brees broke it.
That streak ended against the Los Angeles Rams in week 11 of the 1960 season.
Unitas also led the NFL in touchdown passes four consecutive seasons, a rare feat of consistency.
