History

Liverpool FC was formed in 1892 by John Houlding, the owner of Anfield, after a dispute over rent split him from Everton, the tenants he had just lost. Nicknamed the Reds, the club has gone on to become the most successful in English history alongside Manchester United, with a joint-record 20 league titles — the most recent arriving in 2024-25 — eight FA Cups and a record ten League Cups. Liverpool's six European Cup wins, an English record, run from Bob Paisley's dominant sides of the late 1970s through to the Jürgen Klopp era, and Anfield's Kop end remains one of football's most famous stands, its noise still central to the club's identity on European nights.
