History

Philadelphia joined the NFL in 1933, its name and original eagle logo drawn from the Blue Eagle emblem of the National Recovery Administration, a New Deal agency, reflecting the era it was founded in. The Eagles won NFL championships in the pre-Super Bowl era of the 1940s and '60s, then went decades without a title before winning Super Bowl LII after the 2017 season, upsetting Bill Belichick's Patriots with a trick-play touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Nick Foles. Philadelphia added a second Super Bowl after the 2024 season, again beating Kansas City in the title game. The Eagles' notoriously passionate, demanding fanbase is one of the most discussed in all of American sport.

Records & quirks

  • Philadelphia beat New England 41-33 in Super Bowl LII, capped by the trick-play 'Philly Special' touchdown catch.
  • Foles became the first quarterback ever to catch a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl.
  • The Eagles' 1960 title, a 17-13 win over Green Bay at Franklin Field, was their last before the Super Bowl era.
