History

San Francisco joined the NFL in 1950 after four seasons in the rival All-America Football Conference, its name honouring the prospectors who flooded California during the 1849 Gold Rush. The 49ers won five Super Bowls between the 1981 and 1994 seasons, built first around quarterback Joe Montana and wide receiver Jerry Rice under coach Bill Walsh's influential 'West Coast offense,' then continued into the following decade by Steve Young. That system, emphasising short, high-percentage passing, reshaped offensive strategy across the entire league. San Francisco has reached three further Super Bowls since without a win, most recently after the 2023 season. Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara has hosted the team since 2014.
