The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has closed the Formula 1 season in almost every year since the Yas Marina Circuit opened in 2009, staging a twilight race that begins in daylight and finishes under floodlights. A reprofiling of the layout in 2021 removed a tight chicane and opened up the lap to encourage overtaking.

Away from the track, Yas Island has grown into a full leisure destination — Ferrari World, a waterpark, beaches and concerts — making the grand prix weekend as much a holiday as a race, under the reliably warm and clear skies of the Gulf in December.
