History

The Las Vegas Grand Prix is Formula 1's boldest modern spectacle, a floodlit night race run right down the Las Vegas Strip past its casinos, fountains and the giant Sphere. Grand prix racing had visited the city before — the Caesars Palace Grand Prix ran on a car-park circuit in 1981 and 1982 — but the current event, launched in 2023 and promoted by Formula 1 itself, is on an altogether different scale.

The roughly 6.2-kilometre street layout features a long, high-speed run along Las Vegas Boulevard where cars approach 340 km/h, and the race takes place late on Saturday night local time to suit global audiences. The inaugural 2023 running, won by Max Verstappen, overcame a chaotic build-up to deliver a genuinely entertaining race, and the event has since become one of the most glamorous and commercially significant weekends of the season. With the whole Strip transformed into circuit and grandstand, it is as much a show as a sporting contest.
