History

Roland-Garros grew from the Championnat de France, and its stadium beside the Bois de Boulogne opened in 1928 to host France's defence of the Davis Cup, won the previous year by the celebrated Four Musketeers — Lacoste, Cochet, Borotra and Brugnon — after whom the main show court complex takes its heritage.

Named for the pioneering aviator Roland Garros, the tournament is the only Grand Slam still contested on natural red clay, a slow, high-bouncing surface that rewards patience, footwork and heavy topspin above raw power.
