About French Open 2027 (Roland-Garros)

Roland-Garros, the French Open — the second tennis Grand Slam of the year and the crown jewel of the clay-court season — is played in western Paris over the last week of May and first week of June, provisionally from 23 May to 6 June 2027. The red clay of Roland-Garros, in the leafy 16th arrondissement beside the Bois de Boulogne, is the sport's ultimate test of stamina and craft, and a fortnight of tennis in Paris in early summer is a wonderful reason to visit.

History

Roland-Garros grew from the Championnat de France, and its stadium beside the Bois de Boulogne opened in 1928 to host France's defence of the Davis Cup, won the previous year by the celebrated Four Musketeers — Lacoste, Cochet, Borotra and Brugnon — after whom the main show court complex takes its heritage.

Named for the pioneering aviator Roland Garros, the tournament is the only Grand Slam still contested on natural red clay, a slow, high-bouncing surface that rewards patience, footwork and heavy topspin above raw power. Rafael Nadal turned it into a personal fiefdom, winning a record 14 men's singles titles between 2005 and 2022, while Chris Evert and Steffi Graf remain among its most decorated women's champions.

Best-of-five-set matches make it the most attritional of the majors. A sweeping modernisation added a retractable roof over Court Philippe-Chatrier and floodlit night sessions, refreshing a fortnight that still feels unmistakably Parisian.
