The showpiece staying event, the Goodwood Cup, traces its origins to 1812, when the gold cup was first run over three miles on the estate's newly laid triangular course; it settled at two miles in 1991 and was elevated to Group 1 status in 2017.

The week's other Group 1 features are the Sussex Stakes over a mile, a duel that has repeatedly drawn the season's best milers, and the Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares, a race established in 1840 and named for the Richmond family's friendship with the House of Orange-Nassau.
