History
First run in 1776 and named after the Doncaster sportsman Lieutenant-General Anthony St Leger, the St Leger is the oldest of Britain's five Classics and the world's oldest Classic horse race. Staged on Doncaster's Town Moor over roughly one mile and six furlongs, it is the final and longest leg of the English Triple Crown, following the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby, and the ultimate test of a three-year-old's stamina.
The last horse to complete the Triple Crown was Nijinsky in 1970, a measure of how demanding the treble has become. Run each September as the centrepiece of a four-day festival, the Leger draws big crowds to South Yorkshire and traditionally marks the winding-down of the flat season's high summer. Open to both colts and fillies, it has crowned some of the greatest stayers in the sport's history. Base yourself in Doncaster for the short walk to the course, or in nearby Sheffield or Leeds for wider choice and quick rail links.
