About Henley Royal Regatta 2027
Five days of racing on a stretch of the Thames that has barely changed in a century and a half, with crews from schools, universities and national squads knocked out one head-to-head at a time. The rowing is genuinely brilliant; a good part of the crowd is there for everything else — blazers, Pimm's, and an enclosure whose dress code is enforced without apology.
Where to stay nearby
Henley-on-Thames itself puts you inside the event, with a small choice of five hotels that get booked up quickly given the town's size. Marlow, a short drive upriver, offers a wider spread of nine hotels and a quieter base away from the regatta crowds. London gives by far the largest range of accommodation, with over a thousand hotels to choose from, though you're looking at a longer journey out to Henley each day — allow time for road traffic on regatta days, or check train options into Henley station.

History
Henley Royal Regatta began in 1839 as a single day's racing, staged by the town to draw visitors to Henley-on-Thames with a fair and other amusements alongside it. Competitive rowing quickly became the point rather than the sideshow, the racing was extended to two days from 1840, and Prince Albert's patronage in 1851 turned it into a royal occasion.
The Stewards' Enclosure, the regatta's most exclusive vantage point on the towpath, was created in 1919 and has enforced a strict dress code ever since — originally jackets and ties for men and knee-length skirts for women, updated in 2021 to allow women trouser suits after a petition by an Oxford rower. Getting the dress code wrong still means being turned away at the gate, whoever you are.
Records & quirks
- A 'canvas' — a margin of just a few feet — is one of rowing's tightest recognised winning margins, and still turns up most years at Henley.
- Leander Club has won the Grand Challenge Cup, the regatta's blue-riband event, a record 36 times.
- The petition that changed the dress code in 2021 was started by an Oxford University Women's Boat Club rower.
