About Indianapolis 500 2027

The cars themselves run to a rhythm unlike a road course: high speeds, close pack racing, and the constant tension of strategy calls on when to pit. Fans come for tradition as much as speed, from the singing before the start to the milk waiting in victory lane.

Where to stay nearby

Indianapolis itself is the obvious base, just 7km from the Speedway and offering by far the widest choice of hotels, useful given how early roads fill on race morning. Carmel, about 23km out, is a quieter alternative with a solid range of hotels and a straightforward drive in. Fishers, a little further at 26km, has fewer options but works well if you're happy with a short commute and want to avoid the busiest pockets near the track. Wherever you stay, plan to set off early, as traffic around the Speedway builds fast in the hours before the start.

History

First run in 1911 and won by Ray Harroun, the Indianapolis 500 is the world's oldest major motor race and, with the Monaco Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours, one of motorsport's Triple Crown. Held each Memorial Day weekend at the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway — a rectangular oval nicknamed the Brickyard for its original paved surface — the race covers 200 laps and 500 miles.

Traditions run deep: the winner drinks milk in Victory Lane, a custom dating to the 1930s, and a field of 33 cars roars away after the command to start engines. The Speedway's grandstands and infield hold one of the largest crowds in all of sport, drawing several hundred thousand spectators on race day.

A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Rick Mears and Helio Castroneves share the record with four victories apiece. Qualifying over the preceding weekend sets the grid by four-lap average speed, with pole position among the most coveted starts in racing.

Records & quirks

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 and is the largest-capacity sports venue in the world.
  • A strip of the original brick surface — the Yard of Bricks — still forms the start-finish line, kissed by winners.
  • The winner traditionally celebrates by drinking a bottle of milk, a custom dating back to the 1930s.
