A New Year's Eve college football finale pits a Pac-12 side against a Big Ten opponent in a season-ending bowl matchup, the kind of fixture that draws travelling alumni bands, family groups and diehard fans who plan their holiday trip around one afternoon of football. Kickoff on the last day of the year gives the whole thing a festive, bonus-holiday feel, with fans often stretching the trip into a New Year's celebration afterward.

The Raiders joined the AFL as a charter member in Oakland in 1960 and built their identity on Al Davis's 'Commitment to Excellence' motto and a reputation as the league's rebellious outsiders, reflected in the silver-and-black colours and skull-and-crossbones-style shield logo. Oakland won three Super Bowls, after the 1976, 1980 and 1983 seasons, the latter two among the most dominant title-game performances of their eras.
