The Masters — the first men's golf major of the year and the most coveted title in the sport — is played at Augusta National in Georgia from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 April 2027. The green jacket, Amen Corner, the azaleas and the roars down the back nine make Masters week one of the great occasions in world sport, and the small city of Augusta fills entirely for the tournament, with rooms booked up months ahead and prices at a premium.

The Masters was founded in 1934 by the great amateur Bobby Jones and the businessman Clifford Roberts, staged on the grounds of a former plant nursery whose shrubs still name and colour every hole at Augusta National. Alone among golf's four majors it returns to the same course each year and is the only one run by the club that hosts it, which is why its rituals — the green jacket awarded since 1949, the Champions Dinner, the honorary starters striking the first shots at dawn — feel almost like scripture.

The tournament is so often decided on the closing nine on Sunday, and above all at Amen Corner, the treacherous 11th, 12th and 13th where the azaleas, Rae's Creek and swirling wind have settled championships for decades. Its roll of honour reads like the story of golf itself: Jack Nicklaus with a record six green jackets, the last in 1986 at the age of 46; Gary Player, the first overseas champion in 1961; and Tiger Woods, whose 1997 runaway and astonishing 2019 comeback bookended a generation.
