About The Masters 2027

Every spring the best players in the world gather for a tournament built on tradition rather than spectacle. Azaleas and dogwoods frame the back nine, and the course is famously firm and fast, punishing anything but the most precise approach shots. Patrons, as they are called here, queue for pimento cheese sandwiches and follow leaderboards that seem to shift with every roar from Amen Corner.

Where to stay nearby

North Augusta, just across the South Carolina line, is the closest base and offers the widest choice of hotels within easy reach of the course. Evans sits a little further out but has a solid spread of accommodation and quick access via local roads. Grovetown, the furthest of the three, still works well for those happy with a longer drive in exchange for more availability during this heavily booked week. Expect traffic and limited parking near the venue itself, so many visitors rely on shuttle services or ride-hailing rather than driving straight to the gates.

History

The Masters was founded in 1934 by the great amateur Bobby Jones and the businessman Clifford Roberts, staged on the grounds of a former plant nursery whose shrubs still name and colour every hole at Augusta National. Alone among golf's four majors it returns to the same course each year and is the only one run by the club that hosts it, which is why its rituals — the green jacket awarded since 1949, the Champions Dinner, the honorary starters striking the first shots at dawn — feel almost like scripture.

The tournament is so often decided on the closing nine on Sunday, and above all at Amen Corner, the treacherous 11th, 12th and 13th where the azaleas, Rae's Creek and swirling wind have settled championships for decades. Its roll of honour reads like the story of golf itself: Jack Nicklaus with a record six green jackets, the last in 1986 at the age of 46; Gary Player, the first overseas champion in 1961; and Tiger Woods, whose 1997 runaway and astonishing 2019 comeback bookended a generation.

Records & quirks

  • Augusta National is built on a former plant nursery, and every hole is named after the tree or shrub that lines it.
  • The green jacket, awarded to the champion since 1949, normally never leaves the club — the winner keeps it only for his year, then returns it.
  • Jack Nicklaus has won a record six Masters; in 1986 he became, at 46, the oldest champion in the tournament's history.
  • In 1997 Tiger Woods won by a record 12 strokes with a record low total of 270, and became the tournament's first non-white champion.
  • 'Amen Corner' — the 11th, 12th and 13th holes — is where the Masters is so often won or lost.
  • No winner of the Wednesday par-3 contest has ever gone on to win the Masters itself in the same year.
