Three days of practice, qualifying and racing bring the world's fastest motorcycle riders together in tropical heat and humidity that tests both machines and riders to their limits. The atmosphere builds steadily across the weekend, peaking on race day itself.

The Malaysian Grand Prix is staged at Sepang International Circuit, the sweeping, modern venue on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur that opened in 1999 to a design by the prolific circuit architect Hermann Tilke. Set close to the international airport, around 50 kilometres south of the capital, its 5.5-kilometre lap combines long straights and hard braking zones with fast, cambered corners, all framed by the venue's distinctive twin-roofed grandstands.

Malaysia's hot, humid climate and sudden tropical downpours are a constant feature, frequently turning races into tests of nerve and tyre management. Sepang has hosted a round of the MotoGP World Championship since it opened, and the country's motorcycle-mad fans give the weekend a fervent atmosphere; the circuit also welcomes the paddock each year for pre-season testing. Fast, physical and often unpredictable, the Malaysian round is one of the most demanding and best-loved stops on the flyaway calendar.

Sepang International Circuit, between Kuala Lumpur and the airport in Malaysia's Selangor state, is a dramatic open-air circuit with towering grandstands, tropical canopy surrounds and the unpredictable downpours that define Malaysian racing. Kuala Lumpur, 50 kilometres north, is the natural base with excellent hotels, the Petronas Towers, outstanding hawker food and multicultural neighbourhoods.

Putrajaya and the airport hotel zone offer closer options. The Malaysian GP brings a huge local crowd and fans from across Southeast Asia. Book KL hotels early; the city's stock is plentiful but the race weekend creates genuine competition for rooms.
