About MotoGP Portuguese Grand Prix 2026
A season-closing weekend on one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar, with its blind crests and elevation changes testing riders right to the final laps. Fans arrive for three days of practice, qualifying and racing across the Grand Prix classes, with the track's undulating layout making overtaking and braking points genuinely unpredictable.
Being the last round of the year, there's often a title-deciding edge to proceedings, with championships settled or thrown open under the November sun. Expect a mixed crowd of hardcore paddock regulars and casual fans drawn by the finale stakes.
Where to stay nearby
Alvor is the closest base with the widest hotel choice for its size, a short drive from the circuit and a good option if you want to be near the action without staying in a larger town. Monchique sits slightly further out in the hills, with fewer hotels but a quieter alternative away from race-weekend crowds. Lagos, a little further again, has by far the largest range of accommodation and a livelier base with more restaurants and evening options once the track sessions wrap up. A car is useful for reaching the circuit from any of the three, as public transport links directly to the track are limited on race weekends.

History
The Portuguese Grand Prix is staged at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, the roller-coaster circuit that opened in 2008 in the hills above Portimao on Portugal's southern coast. Ranked by many riders among the most physical and thrilling tracks on the calendar, it climbs and plunges across the Algarve landscape through a series of blind crests and steep gradient changes that reward bravery and commitment.
MotoGP first raced here in 2020, when the circuit stepped in during a disrupted, pandemic-shortened season, and it delivered instantly — Portugal's Miguel Oliveira won that inaugural race in front of his home crowd, one of the great fairytale moments of modern grand prix racing. Portimao quickly earned a permanent place on the schedule, at times hosting the season opener, and its blend of fast, flowing corners and dramatic elevation makes it a genuine favourite in the paddock. The setting helps too: mild autumn weather, quiet beaches and the relaxed pace of the off-season Algarve.
