Portimao quickly earned a permanent place on the schedule, at times hosting the season opener, and its blend of fast, flowing corners and dramatic elevation makes it a genuine favourite in the paddock. The setting helps too: mild autumn weather, quiet beaches and the relaxed pace of the off-season Algarve.

Autodromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimão is a rolling, challenging circuit on the limestone cliffs above the southern Portuguese coast, its blind crests, plunging descents and sweeping turns making it a fan favourite since MotoGP arrived. Portimão town is five minutes from the circuit; Lagos, 20 kilometres west, has the character of its old walled city, beaches and excellent seafood.
