About North West 200 2027

Road racing on closed public roads brings a different crowd to the coast than any track event. Fans line hedgerows, garden walls and farm gates for hours to catch riders flashing past at well over 200kph, with the noise arriving seconds before the bikes do. Practice and qualifying sessions build through the week, so regulars plan their days around which stretch of road gives the best view rather than a single grandstand seat. Local knowledge of the circuit's triangle of villages matters as much as any ticket.

Where to stay nearby

Portrush, Portstewart and Derry all serve as bases for visiting the North West 200 Circuit, with the coastal towns closest to the closed-road course itself. Portrush sits right on top of the action and books up fastest, while Portstewart offers a quieter stay a short hop away. Derry works for those happy to travel in for race days and wanting a wider choice of hotels and evening options.

Portrush — about 1 km away

Portrush sits right beside the circuit, making it the obvious base for anyone wanting to walk to viewing points rather than drive; expect roads in and around the town to be closed or heavily restricted on race days.

Portstewart — about 5 km away

Portstewart is a short drive from the circuit and makes a calmer alternative to Portrush, though the same road closures apply and access on event days needs planning around timed restrictions.

Derry — about 48 km away

Derry is roughly 48km away, best suited to those wanting a bigger choice of hotels and happy with a longer drive; a car is the practical way to reach the circuit as public transport options are limited on race days.

History

Run since 1929 on the roads of the Causeway Coast, the North West 200 is a cornerstone of international road racing and, alongside the Isle of Man TT and the old Ulster Grand Prix, one of the sport's crown jewels. The Triangle's long, fast straights make it the quickest of the lot. It carries a fierce local following and a history entwined with the Dunlop dynasty — Robert, Joey and latterly Michael — whose triumphs and tragedies are woven into the event's identity and the coast that hosts it.
