About North West 200 2027

The North West 200 is Ireland's biggest outdoor sporting event and one of the fastest road races in the world — motorcycles flat out at well over 200mph around the 'Triangle', an 8.9-mile circuit of closed public roads linking the seaside towns of Portrush, Portstewart and Coleraine on the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland.

Race week is provisionally mid-May 2027 (the 2026 event ran 4–9 May; the exact 2027 dates are confirmed by the organisers closer to the time), building through practice and qualifying to the main race Saturday and wrapped in a proper seaside festival of live music, family days and rider meet-and-greets.

Tens of thousands line the hedges, harbour walls and coast road, so rooms in Portrush, Portstewart and Coleraine disappear early — book a base on or near the circuit well ahead of race week.

Portrush — on the circuit

Portrush sits right on the Triangle and is the epicentre of race week — harbour, promenade and the closest you'll get to the action, but the first to sell out, so book far ahead. It has its own train station on the line up from Coleraine and Belfast. Roads on the course close for practice and racing, so leave the car and walk.

Portstewart — on the circuit

Portstewart shares the circuit with Portrush, a couple of miles along the coast — a quieter promenade-and-strand base that still gets the full race-week buzz. The Portrush–Coleraine train stops nearby; expect road closures around the course on race days.

Coleraine — the third corner

Coleraine is the largest of the three towns and the transport hub — the mainline train from Belfast (about 1h15) terminates here, with buses and taxis out to the coast. More rooms and better value than the seafront towns, a short hop from the circuit.

History

Run since 1929 on the roads of the Causeway Coast, the North West 200 is a cornerstone of international road racing and, alongside the Isle of Man TT and the old Ulster Grand Prix, one of the sport's crown jewels. The Triangle's long, fast straights make it the quickest of the lot. It carries a fierce local following and a history entwined with the Dunlop dynasty — Robert, Joey and latterly Michael — whose triumphs and tragedies are woven into the event's identity and the coast that hosts it.
