History

The PGA Championship is the second of golf's four men's majors and the only one run by the PGA of America, the body representing the country's club and teaching professionals. First played in 1916, it began as a match-play event before switching to strokeplay in 1958, and its winner lifts the enormous Wanamaker Trophy, named after the department-store magnate Rodman Wanamaker, who helped found the association.

Long staged in August, it moved to May in 2019 to give the golfing calendar a major a month through the spring and early summer. Its record books are headed by Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus, who each won it five times, while Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the modern champions. From 2027 the championship comes to PGA Frisco, north of Dallas in Texas, on the Fields Ranch East course at the sprawling new headquarters of the PGA of America, bringing a men's major back to the Dallas-Fort Worth area for the first time in more than sixty years.
