History

The Preakness Stakes is the middle jewel of American racing's Triple Crown, run a couple of weeks after the Kentucky Derby and traditionally staged at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. First contested in 1873, it actually predates the Derby and is named after a colt called Preakness, who won an important race at the track's opening in 1870.

Open to three-year-olds, it is run over a mile and three sixteenths, a shade shorter than the Derby, and the winner is draped in a blanket of black-eyed Susans, Maryland's state flower, giving the race its floral nickname. A Derby winner arrives at the Preakness with the Triple Crown still alive, and it is here that many a dream has ended, for only a handful of horses have gone on to sweep all three legs.

In recent years the historic Pimlico grandstand has undergone a major redevelopment, and the race remains the biggest day on Baltimore's sporting calendar.
