About Coventry City v Manchester United
A Saturday afternoon fixture between a Championship-era name still building its way back and one of the biggest clubs in English football. Away support of this scale changes the town for the day, with pubs and the approach roads filling hours before kick-off. Expect a full house atmosphere and a police and stewarding presence to match the visiting numbers. Early May scheduling often means something is still at stake, whether league position or pride.
Where to stay nearby
Exhall sits closest to the ground, a couple of kilometres out, and suits anyone wanting to walk in on the day rather than deal with matchday traffic. Coventry itself has by far the widest choice of hotels and easy access into the city centre for food and pubs before or after the game. Cheltenham is a longer drive, over an hour away, but works as a base if the closer towns are full or priced up on a big-name fixture like this one.

About Coventry City
Coventry City were founded in 1883 as Singers FC, a team of workers from the Singer cycle and car works, taking their present name in 1898 and their sky-blue colours — and nickname — in 1962. The Sky Blues spent 34 unbroken years in the top flight from 1967, including their sole major honour, the 1987 FA Cup, but were relegated in 2001 and spent the next quarter of a century in the lower divisions, including a spell playing home games outside the city during a stadium dispute.
Coventry won the 2025-26 Championship title outright to return to the Premier League for 2026-27, twenty-five years after they left it — one of English football's longer waits finally over.
Coventry City records & quirks
- Highfield Road became England's first all-seater top-flight stadium in 1981, though standing terraces returned a few years later.
- In 1976-77, Coventry and Bristol City stopped competing mid-match once news came that Sunderland had lost elsewhere, sealing safety for both sides.
- Coventry's heaviest ever defeat was 2-11 away to Berwick Rangers in the FA Cup, November 1901.
- The club's "Sky Blue Song", first sung in December 1962, was later recorded as an instrumental single by Ted Heath's orchestra.
