About Sunderland v Ipswich Town
Away fans from Suffolk will make the long trek north, while home supporters get their usual pre-match routine of pubs filling early and the walk down to the ground swelling in the hour before kick-off. Expect the usual weekend crowd noise and a stadium that fills steadily rather than in one late rush. Points matter at this stage of the season, so neither set of fans will treat it as a friendly run-out.
Where to stay nearby

Gateshead is a further option with a smaller catalog, useful if you're combining the trip with time elsewhere in the region, though you'll want to allow extra time getting to the stadium on match day given the fifteen-kilometre distance.

About Sunderland
Sunderland were founded in 1879 and won six English league titles in the pre-war era, a record that makes them one of the most decorated clubs never fully given their due in modern football's popular memory. The Black Cats nickname is said to trace back to the Black Cat Battery, a Napoleonic-era gun emplacement on the banks of the River Wear near where the Stadium of Light now stands.
After eight years outside the top flight, Sunderland returned to the Premier League in 2025, beating Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley through a stoppage-time winner from teenager Tom Watson — a fitting end to their long wait to come home.
Sunderland records & quirks
- In 1973, second-tier Sunderland beat all-conquering Leeds United 1-0 in the FA Cup final, one of the competition's great upsets.
- Roker Park's record attendance was 75,118, for an FA Cup replay against Derby County in March 1933.
- Sunderland's biggest-ever league win, 9-1 over Newcastle United in December 1908, remains their record victory.
- The 2018 Netflix documentary "Sunderland 'Til I Die" chronicled the club's relegation to League One.
