History

Melbourne, Australia's self-styled sporting capital, joins the 2027 Men's Rugby World Cup as a host city, staging pool matches and one of the tournament's new round-of-16 knockout ties. The city's matches will be played at Docklands Stadium — the roofed arena on the edge of the central business district confirmed as Melbourne's venue in early 2026 — rather than the Melbourne Cricket Ground, whose availability for the 2027 window could not be secured.

A 24-team format, the largest in the tournament's history, spreads 52 matches across seven cities over six weeks from 1 October. Melbourne knows how to stage a big event, and for the weeks of the World Cup its laneways, rooftop bars and riverside precincts will hum with visiting supporters. Staying central puts you close to the stadium, the fan zones and the city's celebrated coffee and food scene, with the trams linking it all — a fine base for a rugby trip with a great city attached.
