Europe against the United States, with nothing but pride and precedent on the line. There's no prize money and no individual leaderboard that matters once the singles are done — only the scoreboard between two teams and twelve players a side. Every edition turns on a handful of putts and a partnership or two that clicks.

The Ryder Cup is golf's greatest team event, a biennial match between Europe and the United States played for a modest gold trophy donated by the English seed merchant Samuel Ryder, whose name it bears; the first official match was held in 1927. Contested over three days of fourballs, foursomes and singles match play, it carries no prize money — pride, patriotism and a fiercely partisan crowd are the whole point.

In 2027 the match comes to Adare Manor, a five-star resort in County Limerick whose parkland course, redesigned by the architect Tom Fazio, runs along the banks of the River Maigue. It will be only the second Ryder Cup staged in Ireland, following the 2006 edition at The K Club, and falls in the competition's centenary year.

Each team fields twelve players under a captain, and the side that reaches fourteen and a half points wins the cup. Base yourself in Limerick city, the pretty village of Adare or across the golf-rich south-west of Ireland.
