Every August, Edinburgh becomes the festival capital of the world — four great festivals overlapping across one city. The Fringe (7–31 Aug), the largest arts festival on earth, fills every venue with comedy and theatre; the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (7–29 Aug) lights up the Castle esplanade; the International Festival (7–30 Aug) brings the finest opera, classical music and dance; and the Book Festival (15–30 Aug) gathers the literary world.
