About Thaipusam at Batu Caves 2027

One of the world's great pilgrimages, an hour from central Kuala Lumpur: on Thaipusam more than a million Tamil Hindu devotees process to Batu Caves and climb the 272 rainbow steps to the temple in the cavern, many carrying kavadis — ornate burdens of steel and peacock feathers borne as acts of devotion.

The procession actually begins the night before at Sri Mahamariamman Temple in the city and walks through the small hours. Go early, dress respectfully, and expect crowds like nowhere else: this is a living festival, not a show staged for visitors.
