History

The Open Championship is golf's oldest major, first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, when eight professionals competed over three rounds of the club's twelve-hole links to decide who would take the title of 'Champion Golfer'. St Andrews wasn't part of the story at first — the Old Course didn't host an Open until 1873, the tournament's thirteenth playing — but it went on to become the championship's spiritual home, staging the event more often than any other course.

Playing the world's best over the same ancient links where the game itself is said to have taken shape, crossing the Swilcan Bridge and finishing in front of the R&A clubhouse, is treated by golfers and spectators alike as one of the sport's great pilgrimages — a status built up over more than a century and a half.
