About The Open 2027

The Open Championship — golf's oldest major and its only one played on links — returns to the Old Course at St Andrews, the Home of Golf, in July 2027, provisionally from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 July. To watch the world's best play the ancient links where the game was born, over the Swilcan Bridge and up the 18th to the town, is one of sport's great pilgrimages, and the small Fife town fills completely for Open week. Rooms in St Andrews are scarce and booked far ahead, so reserve as early as you can, or base yourself in Dundee, Edinburgh or across Fife with a drive or train to the coast.

History

The Open Championship is golf's oldest major, first played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, when eight professionals competed over three rounds of the club's twelve-hole links to decide who would take the title of 'Champion Golfer'. St Andrews wasn't part of the story at first — the Old Course didn't host an Open until 1873, the tournament's thirteenth playing — but it went on to become the championship's spiritual home, staging the event more often than any other course. Playing the world's best over the same ancient links where the game itself is said to have taken shape, crossing the Swilcan Bridge and finishing in front of the R&A clubhouse, is treated by golfers and spectators alike as one of the sport's great pilgrimages — a status built up over more than a century and a half.
