For a few minutes in the middle of the day, the sky goes dark and the temperature drops as the moon fully blocks the sun. Streetlights can flick on, birds fall quiet, and the horizon takes on a strange 360-degree glow. Crowds gather in open spaces well before the moment of totality, since cloud cover on the day determines everything and there is no second chance.

Southern Spain sits directly on the path this time, which is what draws so many people to this particular stretch of coast rather than waiting for the next one.

The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 makes its European landfall over the far south of Spain, and the ancient port of Cádiz sits within the path of totality. Reckoned among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in western Europe, Cádiz occupies a slender spit reaching into the Atlantic, a compact old town of narrow streets, watchtowers, golden domes and sea-lashed ramparts.

On eclipse morning the Moon will cover the Sun for close to three minutes, the corona hanging over the rooftops as the sky darkens at mid-morning. This is one of the most accessible places in Europe to witness the event, part of a broader path that also crosses northern Morocco and North Africa on its way to Egypt, where totality is longest.

Cádiz province is well placed for the spectacle, with the beaches of the Costa de la Luz, the sherry town of Jerez and windswept Tarifa all nearby, so rooms across the region will be in heavy demand.
