History

The Championships began in 1877, when the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club needed money to repair its pony roller and decided a tennis tournament might pay for it. Twenty-two amateurs entered the only event on offer, the Gentlemen's Singles, making it the world's first official lawn tennis tournament — and, in time, tennis's oldest Grand Slam.

Grass was simply the surface the club's lawns were already laid with; nearly one hundred and fifty years later, Wimbledon is the only one of the four majors still played on it. Traditions have accumulated around that original decision ever since — all-white dress, strawberries and cream served on the grounds, and the famous overnight Queue — but they all sit on top of the same club and the same grass that hosted twenty-two players in 1877.

Records & quirks

  • The 2010 first-round match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut lasted 11 hours 5 minutes over three days — still the longest match in tennis history.
  • Isner won the deciding fifth set 70–68, the highest game score ever played.
  • Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic share the men's record of eight singles titles; Martina Navratilova holds the women's record with nine.
