About WorldSBK Portuguese Round 2026 (Estoril)

Superbike racing brings the World Championship paddock to a fast, technical circuit that rewards braking precision over raw top speed. The weekend runs across three days, building from free practice through qualifying to the twin main races that decide the points. Riders wrestle production-based machines through tight, undulating corners, and the tyre strategy calls made in the closing laps often decide the podium. Expect the closest racing on the calendar, decided by tenths rather than seconds.

History

World Superbike's Portuguese round is staged at the Circuito do Estoril, opened in 1972 in the hills above the Atlantic resort coast west of Lisbon. For over a decade it was a Formula 1 venue, hosting the Portuguese Grand Prix from 1984 to 1996 — most memorably in 1985, when a young Ayrton Senna took the first grand prix win of his career in torrential rain, a drive still regarded as one of the finest wet-weather performances ever seen.

The 4.2-kilometre circuit is quick and flowing, with a long main straight that rewards bravery and top speed, and its position near the sea makes for a spectacular backdrop. Few race weekends offer a better base: the elegant towns of Estoril and Cascais are minutes from the gates, all Atlantic promenades and seafood, with the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra a short drive into the hills and Lisbon half an hour away by the coastal railway. October keeps the light golden and the crowds pleasantly thin.
