Staying in Alcalà de Xivert

Alcalà de Xivert is really two places: an inland farming town of almond and olive groves in Castellón province, and its coastal district of Alcossebre, a few kilometres away on the Mediterranean, where nearly all visitors end up. The old town's main sight is the baroque church of Sant Joan Baptista, whose bell tower is one of the tallest in the Valencian region, while the ruined Templar castle of Xivert looks down from the hills behind.

Alcossebre's draw is a string of small sandy beaches and coves, plus the Serra d'Irta natural park, one of the last stretches of undeveloped coastline in the region and good for walking and cycling. Be honest: this is a quiet, family-oriented resort dominated by holiday apartments and Spanish summer visitors, with limited nightlife, a thin hotel choice and a lot of shuttered businesses outside the summer season. Stay in Alcossebre near Playa del Carregador for walkable access to the beach, restaurants and the start of the Irta coastal trails.
