Almuñécar sits on the Costa Tropical, a stretch of Andalucian coast that gets far less attention than the Costa del Sol despite being just as scenic, with the Sierra Nevada foothills dropping almost straight into the Mediterranean. The town has genuine Phoenician and Roman roots, including an aqueduct and the ruins of a Roman fish-salting factory, plus a Moorish castle overlooking the old quarter, so it doesn't feel manufactured for tourism the way some coastal resorts do.

Its beaches are mostly dark volcanic sand and shingle rather than the soft white stuff, which suits some travellers and disappoints others expecting a classic beach holiday. Tropical fruit farming, mangoes and custard apples especially, still shapes the surrounding landscape and local produce. Be honest: it's a low-key Spanish family resort town, not a nightlife destination, and outside July and August things get genuinely quiet. With only six hotels listed here, choice is limited, so stay as close to the old town and Playa San Cristóbal as you can to be within walking distance of the sights and restaurants.
