Staying in Vienna
Vienna runs on music, cake and imperial leftovers, and makes no apology for any of them. The Staatsoper sells standing tickets cheaply on the day, the Musikverein is where the New Year's concert actually happens, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum holds Bruegels that alone justify the trip. Coffee-house culture is the daily rhythm: order a melange at Café Central or Sperl and nobody will hurry you.
It's a formal, orderly city — some find it stately, others find it stiff — and it's not cheap, though the trams and metro are excellent value. Stay inside or just off the Ringstrasse (1st district) to walk to everything, or in the 7th around Spittelberg for cobbled lanes, independent shops and lower rates fifteen minutes from the centre on foot.
