Viennas grandest Advent market takes over the square in front of the neo-Gothic city hall, with the building floodlit behind 150 stalls and the surrounding park trees strung with light installations. It is the one where the punch is taken seriously — hot punsch in dozens of variations alongside the more familiar Glühwein — and where the food runs to Kaiserschmarrn, Käsekrainer and enormous slabs of Bauernkrapfen.

A skating trail winds through the park alongside, running well into January, and the tram ring stops directly outside. Because it opens earlier than most and closes after Christmas, it suits a trip built around the days most other markets have already packed away.
