Germanys most-visited Christmas market sets up in the shadow of the cathedral, where a huge tree and some 130 wooden stalls fill the square between the Dom and the Roman-Germanic Museum. Glühwein arrives in collectable mugs you pay a deposit for and mostly bring back; the food is bratwurst, Reibekuchen and roasted almonds; the choir stages run carols most evenings.
