Staying in Krems an der Donau
Krems an der Donau is the eastern gateway to the Wachau, the Danube's vineyard-terraced valley and a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and it's one of Austria's oldest towns, with a well-preserved medieval core entered through the Steiner Tor. The adjoining district of Stein adds narrow lanes and the Kunstmeile, a cluster of serious galleries including the Kunsthalle, the Karikaturmuseum and the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, which is more culture than a town this size usually offers.
Wine is the real draw: this is Grüner Veltliner and Riesling country, with seasonal Heurigen and Wachau apricots in summer. It's also a natural base for the Danube Cycle Path and for Göttweig Abbey on the hill across the river. Krems is small and quiet, evenings wind down early, and river-cruise and Vienna day-trip crowds can swamp the old town at midday, while many wine taverns keep limited hours outside the main season. Stay in or near the Altstadt or Stein for walkable access to the galleries, the riverfront and the cycle path.
