Antwerp punches well above its size, starting at the station: around 84 per cent of the world's rough diamonds pass through the district beside Antwerpen-Centraal, itself a cathedral-like railway palace often rated among the world's grandest. The real cathedral, the Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady, holds several Rubens altarpieces, and the painter's restored home, the Rubenshuis, sits nearby, for this was his city.
Antwerp is also a genuine fashion capital, launchpad of the Antwerp Six and home to the MoMu fashion museum, with a busy Scheldt-side port that is among Europe's largest. The diamond quarter itself is workaday rather than glamorous, and the port edges are industrial. Stay around the Grote Markt and cathedral for the old centre, or in trendy Het Zuid for galleries, restaurants and the riverside.
