Arbroath is a working fishing town on Scotland's east coast, best known for the Arbroath smokie, the smoked haddock that carries EU protected-status and is still cured in small smokehouses down by the harbour. The main sight is Arbroath Abbey, the red-sandstone ruin where the Declaration of Arbroath was sealed in 1320, asserting Scottish independence, and it's worth building a stop around. Beyond that and the harbour itself, there isn't much to detain visitors for more than a day or two: the town centre is modest and the seafront can feel exposed and blustery outside summer.

Be honest: this is a stop for smokies and abbey ruins, not a resort destination, and it works best as a base for exploring the Angus coast rather than a holiday in itself. Brechin Cathedral is a short drive inland if you want to extend the trip. With only six hotels listed, choice is limited, so book early in summer; staying near the harbour puts you closest to the smokehouses and the abbey.
