Staying in Biguglia
Biguglia is essentially Bastia's southern suburb, a commuter town on the main road down Corsica's east coast, though it was once far grander, serving as the island's seat of government in the medieval period before power shifted to Bastia. The real draw today is the Étang de Biguglia, the largest lagoon in Corsica and a protected nature reserve whose reedbeds and shallow waters attract herons, flamingos and other migrating birds, with walking and cycling paths along its edges.
Between the lagoon and the sea runs the Lido de la Marana, a long, narrow strip of sandy beach that gets lively with Bastia locals in summer. Be honest: the town itself is mostly retail parks, roundabouts and traffic along the coastal highway, and there is little old-village charm unless you climb to the hillside historic core. It is, however, very convenient for Bastia-Poretta airport just to the south. Stay out on the Marana side for direct beach access and lagoon views rather than beside the busy main road.
