Hotels in Bonifacio

Bonifacio is Corsica's southern full stop, a walled Genoese citadel perched on bone-white limestone cliffs that hang so far over the sea that some houses look ready to drop into it. Below, the marina sits in a narrow, fjord-like inlet, and on clear days Sardinia is plainly visible across the strait. The big draws are the cliff-top walk, the King of Aragon's Stairs cut into the rock face, and boat trips out to the sea caves and the turquoise waters of the Lavezzi islands.

Be honest: in July and August the town is overwhelmed by day-trippers and yachts, parking is miserable, prices run high for what you get, and the wind can be relentless. It is small enough that a couple of days covers it, and it works well as a base for the beaches further up the south coast. Figari Sud-Corse Airport is a short drive away. Stay in the Haute Ville to enjoy the old town once the day crowds have gone, or by the marina if you want easy access to boats and restaurants.
